Watch Clasps Explained

!±8± Watch Clasps Explained

Watch Buckles and Clasps Watch buckles and clasps come in many different styles and configurations. It would be impossible to list and display all of them, so we have attempted to describe in some detail the main types as well as provide some definition to the terms. The terms clasp and buckle are mostly interchangeable. Buckle usually refers to the strap type band while a clasp is usually associated with a metal bracelet. However, we will use the terms interchangeably here.

It is the part of the watch that either opens or separates allowing the watch to fit around the hand. Typically, the buckle is then latched together in some form. Deployment Clasp A deployment clasp is the type where the clasp opens out and folds. It locks in place with a small hook type latch. In this example we are looking at a Seiko 5 Automatic watch. The clasp then folds out in to thirds enabling the watch to fit over the hand. Pushbutton Deployment Clasp A pushbutton deployment clasp is the same as a regular deployment clasp, however in order for it to be released, you must pinch the buttons on either side of the clasp.

In this example we are looking at a Ladies Citizen Titanium Corso. The pushbutton is a security feature to prevent the clasp from opening on its own. Fold-over Pushbutton Deployment Clasp Some watches like the Citizen Titanium Skyhawk have two security features. This model has a fold-over snapping latch that secures the whole clasp as well as having the pushbutton feature. The fold-over latch is first flipped out allowing the claps to be deployed by pushing in the buttons on either side. The bracelet is then extended to its full size to fit over the hand. Hidden Deployment Clasp A hidden deployment clasp is the type where the clasp is invisible when it is being worn.

The ends of the bracelet come together to meet so that none of the clasp shows. This is done to help the appearance. In this example we are showing a Movado Mens Sport Edition watch. These types of clasps are sometimes referred to as butterfly clasps because they open on both sides characteristic of a butterfly's wings. The bracelet is then extended to its maximum length. Some hidden deployment clasps have pushbutton release mechanisms on them for added security. Such is the case with this Movado Valor. Jewelry Clasp A jewelry clasp is the simplest of all clasps. It is a latch that snaps closed around a bar.

Shown here is a Movado Ladies Harmony. It is released by gently lifting the clasp and unsnapping it from the latch bar. Strap Buckle A strap buckle (Also known as a Tang buckle) is a simple pin system that holds a strap in place by being secured through one of a series of holes in the strap. This is also common on many belts. Show here is a Wenger Avalanche. Specialty Strap Buckle Some straps have special deployment type clasps attached to them. This Movado Strap Eliro has a rubber strap that has a pushbutton deployment clasp attached to it for easy removal. The clasp also allows the strap to be pulled through allowing for a perfect fit around the wrist.

I Love Touring Italy - Southern Calabria

!±8± I Love Touring Italy - Southern Calabria

If you are looking for a European tourist destination, consider the Calabria region of southern Italy on the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Ionian Sea. Calabria is the toe of the Italian boot. There are excellent tourist attractions, and you won't have to fight crowds, but you may have to fight hot, hot summers. With a little luck you'll avoid tourist traps, and come back home with the feeling that you have truly visited Italy. This article examines tourist attractions in southern Calabria. Be sure to read our companion article on northern Calabria.

We begin our tour of southern Calabria at Pizzo on the western Tyrrhenian coast. We proceed south and west along the coast to Tropea. Then we continue mostly south along the coast to the capital, Reggio di Calabria. We leave the coast to visit the Aspromonte mountains and then continue east and north to Locri on the eastern Ionian coast. We head inland to Gerace and then go and west along the coast before finishing our tour a bit inland at Stilo. As always in this part of the world directions are approximate; you have to go where the roads go.

Pizzo, population about eight thousand, is a seaport and resort situated on a steep cliff overlooking the Gulf of Santa Eufemia. Its main attractions are the Baroque Church of San Giorgio (St. George's Church) and the Castle in which the French general Murat, an ex-king of Naples, was killed in 1815 after attempting to rouse the populace against the Bourbon kings.

Tropea, population about seven thousand, is one of the most beautiful seaside towns in Calabria. It lies between the gulfs of Sant' Eufemia and Gioa overlooking the sea. And yet it is still relatively undiscovered. You'll love its untamed white sandy beaches, old houses, and ancient churches. Its Norman Cathedral has a special feature, unexploded U.S. bombs from the Second World War, each bearing a note of thanks to the Madonna. Near the main square is the medieval Santa Maria della Isola church and monastery, remodeled in Gothic style and touched up a bit after an earthquake slightly over one hundred years ago. If you fall in love with the town you may want to sign up for some Italian language classes. And don't forget the onions, the local onions are so good that Italians call red onions Cipolla di Tropea (Tropea Onion).

The city's most famous citizen, Umberto Anastasio, was born in 1902 but left for New York City about 1919. There he lived under the name Alberto Anastasia, a leader of Murder, Incorporated. He died in a hotel barbershop in a hail of bullets. Anastasia's fictionalized story was a part of the Oscar winning movie On The Waterfront.

Reggio di Calabria, population about two hundred thousand, is the oldest and largest city in Calabria. It sits at the base of a long mountain range running through the center of the region. Over the centuries the area has been subjected to multiple several earthquakes and tsunamis. Furthermore, the soil is difficult to work. The city was founded by Greek settlers in the Eighth Century B. C. and passed from one hand to another over the centuries. Interestingly enough it was home to the first dated Hebrew book, printed in 1475. The worst earthquakes were in 1783 and then in 1908 when an estimated 80% of its buildings collapsed and thousands of people were killed. It took a full generation for the city to recover.

Reggio di Calabria contains many interesting sights. We will start with arguably the most unexpected one, the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia (The National Museum of Greater Greece), a very important archeological museum. Make sure to see the two Bronzi di Riace (Riace Bronze) statues of bearded warriors whose origin is subject to debate among the experts. While they were discovered by an amateur scuba diver in 1972, they didn't go on display for almost ten years.

The famous poet Gabriele D'Annunzio called the Falcomatà promenade by the sea the most beautiful kilometer in Italy, and, believe me, it has a lot of competition. The old city is proud of its Greek walls; the section near the promenade dates back to the Fourth Century B.C. There are also Roman baths. Other sights include the church of Saint Gaetano Catanoso, named for the first saint from Calabria in five hundred years, and the Byzantine-Norman Chiesa degli Ottimati (Church of the Optimates) initially destroyed by the Saracens towards the end of the Sixteenth Century. Make sure to see the Venetian-style Villa Zerbi and the Pinoteco Comunale (Town Art Gallery).

The mile-high (actually more, about two kilometer-high) Aspromonte mountain range provides a real change of pace from the Calabria seacoasts. What a view. The name means "sour mountains." As you may well imagine its steep terrain and rocky soil are difficult to cultivate. You can find a ski resort at Gambarie east of Reggio di Calabria and an absolutely spectacular sanctuary Madonna di Polsi with an annual fair in late August and early September. Would you believe that some locals still speak a Greek dialect? Perhaps not surprisingly the local grape is Greco. Accompanied by some three thousand volunteers the hero of the struggle for Italian unification, Giuseppe Garibaldi, was defeated and captured in 1862 in the Battle of Aspromonte. But he had the last laugh a few years later.

Locri, population thirteen thousand, was founded about twenty-seven hundred years ago by a Greek tribe. Its famous lawmaker was the first to devise the written Greek code of law. He suggested that whoever proposed changing a law should do so with a noose about his or her neck, and be hanged if the amendment failed to pass. Talk about a sense of justice. The original city was abandoned in the Fifth Century and later destroyed. You can see some of the city walls and ruins of a Greek theater.

Gerace, population three thousand, sits on a hill composed of sixty-million-year old fossils from the sea. The site has probably been populated for about ten thousand years. Believe it or not, this little town once contained more than one hundred twenty churches. Among those remaining churches are the Norman Cathedral, the largest church in Calabria includes the Eleventh Century Prison of the Five Martyrs of Gerace, the Thirteenth Century Church of St. Francis with a beautiful Baroque altar, and the Tenth Century San Giovannello (Little St. John). You'll enjoy Gerace's medieval town and the remains of an old castle, probably dating from the Tenth Century.

Stilo, population three thousand, was founded by the Greeks. In 1940 the area was the site of the Battle of Calabria, also called the Battle of Punta Stilo, one of the biggest naval encounters of World War II. The Italian navy and the combined forces of the British and Australian navies both claimed victory but the battle was considered to be a draw.

This town's most impressive sight is the Ninth Century Byzantine Cattolica di Stilo which is really beautiful inside and out. Other churches include the Cathedral, the Church of San Domenico, and the Church of San Nicola da Tolentino. And don't forget to see the Norman Castle and the Fountain of the Dolphins.

What about food? There's lots of it in Calabria. Reggio di Calabria 's best gelateria, Tonino in the Corso, makes a red onion ice cream (as well as others based on squid ink and nduja, the local spicy salami). Let's suggest a sample menu, one of many. Start with Spaghetti al Ragù di Totano (Spaghetti with Squid and Tomato Sauce). Then try Cinghiale all'aspromonte (Wild boar Aspromonte style). For dessert indulge yourself with Passulate (Spicy Nut and Sultana Biscuits.) Be sure to increase your dining pleasure by including local wines with your meal.

We'll conclude with a quick look at Calabria wine. Calabria devotes about sixty thousand acres to grapevines; it ranks 13th among the 20 Italian regions for the acreage devoted to wine grapes. About 91% of its wine is red or rosé, leaving 9% for white. The region produces twelve DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. Only 2.4% of Calabria wine carries the DOC designation.

Most Calabria wine comes from the northern part of the region. If you can find it, you should try the sweet Greco di Bianco DOC wine grown from a southern Calabria version of the Greco grape, and the similar non-DOC Greco di Gerace.

Citizen EcoDrive Titanium

More Details j.mp Customer Reviews: "I got the watch off Amazon for a birthday gift and I must say I'm impressed. It looked good in the picture here, and it looks even better in person! I read about the arm hair pulling problem and I don't have any problems but that's probably because I'm only 15 and I'm Asian so my arm hair isn't exactly long so I have no answer to that. My arm is only about 2.5 or so inches wide so I'm skinny needless to say, and the watch still fits me fine after removing some links. Time is accurate from what I can tell, but I had a little trouble setting the date, wouldn't turn past Thursday at first though I got it to by fowarding the time to the next day. I don't know if it's a problem or not since I haven't read the guide yet. Another thing I'm impressed by is the fact that this watch is solid titanium. Even in the middle of the links. Many cheaper watches are hollow inside the links, but not this one, it's solid titanium all the way through. As others have said, the markers really are very bright in the dark, I tested it in a completely dark room and I was able to tell the time with no trouble at all. I would recommend this watch for anyone looking for a stylish watch that's not too pricy. It's great for everyday wear so don't hesitate if you think it's too formal. If I, a 15 year old thinks it's not too formal, it probably isn't :). Hope this helps some of your decisions." "I previously bought a Citizen Eco-Drive Blue Angels Skyhawk stainless ...

Dark Conspiracies and Extraterrestrial Secrets, Part 4

!±8± Dark Conspiracies and Extraterrestrial Secrets, Part 4

Is it possible that the government is playing some kind of weird reverse-psychology game with us? Perhaps they are reverse-engineering our brains, but in reverse, practically lobotomizing us into submission. In other words, as the government declares that the whole UFO phenomenon is a hoax, causing us to wonder what they're hiding. How many of you have stumbled upon a large "NO TRESPASSING!" sign, and you're tempted to enter at your own risk, just to see what the heck is beyond it? It's a natural tendency to be curious about what another is hiding. When a secret is declared, we want to know what it is.

There is a pretty radical theory, probably not as popular as the others, that suggests we are being duped in reverse. A rather strange gentleman named Jim Keith, author of Saucers of the Illuminati, either has a wildly vivid imagination, or maybe he's smoked too much pot in his day -- or possibly he has indeed stumbled upon yet another dark conspiracy.

Perhaps the government seems to be hiding something from us, such as the whole UFO phenomenon, but despite their efforts it leaks out to the public regardless, whereby we are hornswoggled into being so distracted by discovering what we think the government is hiding from us that the real secret is still being concealed from us.

With this in mind, Jim Keith proposes that there is a covert group pulling the strings, either within our government, or they are masterminds of a mysterious shadow government -- essentially the Puppet Masters pulling all the strings. The idea is that such a group has been convolutedly convincing us that we are being observed by extraterrestrials, and that there might even be an invasion on the way, and this paranoia-inciting ploy would serve as a diversionary tactic for something far more sinister in the works, perhaps an inner invasion by agents of this dark organization, with the plan of world domination, creating the New World Order. Jim Keith and other conspiracy theorists propose that the name of this group is the Illuminati, and that its current exterior manifestation is the Freemasons.

Alright, stop right there. I've known a few such Freemasons, and they were very upstanding, spiritually-minded individuals who believed in God and had high moral standards. Perhaps they were fooling me, while we had fascinating mystical conversations about God and the state of the universe and such, when all along they were probably planning world domination. Yeah right. But then again, when such Freemasons discuss humanitarian interests and desiring only what is best for the world, what do these ambiguous implications really mean? Control? Domination? Forced submission? Or are these just paranoid notions of a fear-fraught society -- caused by misguided conspiracy theorists?

Anyway, it is still possible that some cloak-and-dagger outfit, whatever its name may be, has been pulling the wool over our eyeballs all along. Many of us plainly except that UFOs and extraterrestrials are real, and this may be the real cover-up, concealing some diabolical plan of world domination by the alleged Illuminati, who have been undergoing mind control programs, in an attempt to brainwash the population of the planet, through such avenues as propaganda in the newspapers and magazines, television and media in general, citizens being drugged and experimented upon, and sinister mock alien abductions, just to name a few absurd possibilities.

Jim Keith suggests that subtle information can be relayed to TV viewers subliminally. This could mean any messages from "Buy Super Crunchola Bar now!" to "Aliens are invading our planet!" could be delivered to our subconscious minds. There may even be messages regarding the assassination of politicians or famous public figures -- even the president. That doesn't mean everyone listening is going to automatically obey such a message -- but it might just take one screw-loose wacko to respond and commit such a dirty deed. At any rate, Mr. Keith suggests that through the "hypnotic electronic flicker of the television tube, studies have been conducted showing that television actually induces a trance state that, with years of watching, becomes permanent." He goes on to say that TV watchers stare blankly at the screen, entering a lethargic state, and tend to nod off. This would be the best time for some sinister subliminal message to be delivered to our unsuspecting subconscious mind. Sounds scary, eh? Next time you go to watch TV, how long will you hesitate before you turn on the set? Or will you have the courage to walk away? Or if you do turn it on and watch your favorite program, how long will it take before you nod off, becoming receptive to some subliminal diabolical message?

Another clever ploy would be false alien abductions, pulled off by these covert operators, convincing the victim that he has been kidnapped by aliens and experimented upon. Most likely the experiments were real, involving anything from inserting implants (which might be tracking devices) to mind manipulation and other experiments. There is the possibility that the mind control concept from The Manchurian Candidate is quite real, where individuals become assassins without knowing it, and at the right time and place, their preordained command is initiated. There have been many assassinations of public figures in the United States: John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., John Lennon, to name a few, and many failed attempts as well, like Ronald Reagan and Pope John Paul II. Were these actually committed by Manchurian Candidate-type assassins, sent by the masterminds of this shadow government, called by many the Illuminati?

Nevertheless, these are all possible scenarios, as far as most conspiracy theories go. But it does make you think, that if the government were trying to hide the whole UFO phenomenon, why has it done such a poor job? It is very possible that the UFO phenomenon itself is the cover-up. If that's the case, exactly what is being covered up? The instigation of the plan of world domination by the Illuminati? The rise of the New World Order? At this point, folks, anything's possible!

The Enigma of the Mysterious Men in Black, Part 4

!±8± The Enigma of the Mysterious Men in Black, Part 4

What is the bare naked truth behind the Men in Black? Will we ever find out for sure?

There is one idea that the whole MIB myth was created by the government, so that people would speak of these mysterious intimidators and their bizarre activities, their strange appearance and weird mannerisms, just so that the witnesses would appear pretty ridiculous, and in turn their UFO experiences would seem equally ridiculous. This is very possible, and as good a theory as any other.

Although these government masqueraders may be out to perpetrate this bizarre delusion, they are simultaneously succeeding at silencing most of the eyewitnesses of UFO phenomena. But when these people do speak out, they quite often appear as overly imaginative crackpots, which the government depends on.

Threats and Harassment

Mostly common ordinary people who have experienced UFO sightings or alien encounters have been pursued by the dark intruders. But even UFO investigators have been approached by MIBs and silenced, because the shadowy men have threatened these researchers in order to seize their studies and investigations of the UFO phenomena. Clearly, the MIBs are suppressing these UFO investigators just in case they might uncover something they're not supposed to know about -- but what?

Just what kind of threats have the MIBs imposed on people? And were they intentional or just empty threats? One report stated that the MIBs threatened a witness that he would be sent to prison for treason if he didn't comply. Sometimes they would act overly aggressive, but often they would just give ambiguous threats. But quite often, simply by the power and authority that they exuded, this seemed to be enough to scare the people to keep silent, and this may have been due to the MIBs hypnotic abilities. Sometimes they would bark some empty "or else!" threat and that would be enough to silence them. Although there were numerous such empty threats, more than likely it was the hypnotic spell they cast on their victims that subdued them into a state of fright which caused them to be silenced. Usually the frightened ones would never hear from these mysterious intruders again, but since it took several years for many of them to finally speak out, perhaps it took the mesmeric spell this long to finally fade off.

Government Secrets

Actually, it's not too hard to believe the US government would be involved with bizarre covert operations. In the mid-50s government experiments were conducted where minimal levels of radiation were released upon unsuspecting US citizens, supposedly for the benefit of medical knowledge, but clever cover-ups were initiated to hide the horrifying facts of these inhumane endeavors. Plus there have been the testing of nuclear weapons in supposedly remote locations where wandering people have been exposed. Not to mention that the government has assisted foreign factions that ended up becoming terrorists. So it's not really hard to believe the government could send mysterious agents to harass and silence eyewitnesses of various forms of UFO related phenomena.

But why all the silencing and the cover-ups? We may never have a complete answer, only vague ideas and cloudy speculations. But it makes you think that something pretty big is being concealed by various governments, such as the US, Great Britain, Australia in particular, if they have to go to extreme measures to silence witnesses. But then the meager information that is allowed to be released to the public, through controlled disclosures, is conducted very carefully. When you realize how ridiculous some of the information is we hear, it tends to makes a lot of people skeptical: little green men, invaders from Mars, photos of hubcaps or frisbees whizzing across the sky, pictures of a freaky looking alien shaking the hand of the President, women becoming pregnant after alien abductions, even ominous Men in Black coming to your door to scare you to death and shut you up, and other bizarre stories that we could toss in the category of UFO urban legends, which end up in the highly questionable tabloids. The government depends on these fabricated ridiculous ideas, which causes skepticism to flourish. I wonder, how many of these crazy ideas were deliberately concocted by the government? And how much of it is due to the wild imagination of the public? Obviously the government allows us to speculate and weave fantastic yarns ourselves that end up sounding more like science fiction then plausible fact. Although there is a substantial cult-following of UFO believers, the government has still succeeded at planting seeds of skepticism in the rest of the people.

To take a quote from Col. Philip J. Corso's book, The Day After Roswell, "The cover-up is the disclosure and the disclosure is the cover-up." In order to create an elaborate cover-up, you have to let some of the information leak out to the public and allow it to be exaggerated to the point of becoming ridiculous, because the public, with its wild imagination, is very good at that. Simply consider Hollywood and the wild science-fiction movies and television shows it has created over the years to feed our imagination even further. Then we say, "None of this is real, it's just fantasy." But, isn't there a grain of truth somewhere amidst all the fantasy? If we can just strip away the wild imagination and the flagrant speculations we have, will we ever see the bare naked truth? Will we finally see what's really going on?
